K Alferio is President of The Cultural Arts Center at Glen Allen. As the Richmond Region’s most comprehensive arts facility, the mission of the organization is to inspire creativity and stimulate the senses through art, music, dance and theatre. Performances, classes and exhibitions in visual, performing and literary arts offer over 80,000 patrons the opportunity to experience the arts and discover their creative voices.
Prior to joining The Center, Alferio served as the executive director of CITYCELEBRAIONS in Richmond, Virginia. With over 8 major events annually, the organization created an estimated economic impact of over $10 million each year. During her tenure she led a fiscal turn-around, taking the organization from deep debt to a cash positive position by developing new revenue streams, creating updated programming, revamping sponsorship initiatives and securing grants. During her tenure at the organization, Alferio was responsible for bringing the National Folk Festival to Richmond in the hopes of creating a signature event for the region. This vision has been realized in the ever popular Richmond Folk Festival which continues to thrive today.
Her understanding of corporate initiatives has come from experience in the communications and brand departments of Capital One Financial and Genworth Financial. At both companies she led international event initiatives and sponsorship marketing efforts.
As a past Chairperson of the Board of International Festivals and Events Association (IFEA), Alferio has been a featured speaker throughout the country as well as in Europe and South Africa. Her energetic style and experiential presentations engage, entertain and inform audiences from the moment she takes the stage. In November of 2004 she was inducted into the IFEA Hall of Fame for her outstanding contributions to the special event industry throughout the world.
She is the author of the book, The Good…the Blah and Ugly—an events guide to media relations. She has won numerous awards for marketing, advertising and production throughout her career. She has served as faculty for certification programs at George Washington University, Norfolk State University, Virginia Tech and Southeast Tourism Society Marketing College.
With over 20 years in the events/tourism industry, Alferio has served as the Vice President of Global Events at Genwoth Financial; Director of Events and Media Productions for Capital One; President of Alferio Productions; Special Events and Public Relations Director for Stone Mountain Park; and Vice President of Marketing and Tourism at the Shreveport-Bossier Convention and Visitors Bureau.
Alferio lives in her 90 year old home with her husband Gerry, their Greyhound Cowboy, and spends her time working with her quarter-horse-in-training, Dakota.
When asked to explain why she does what she does, Alferio replies, “I firmly believe that the world can be changed through exposure to arts and culture. It is all about making memories and changing attitudes through bringing people and cultures together in an entertaining, enlightened setting.”
